Equal rightsWhen Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968, riots known as the Holy Week Uprising broke out across the nation. 110 cities were up in flames. People were looting businesses and smashing windows and cars. The worst rebellions took place in Washington DC, and in order to defend the nation's capital, President Johnson released 13,600 troops on the angry mob of 20,000. Machine guns were set up around the perimeters of the White House. Curfews were installed and the selling of alcohol and drugs was prohibited. Needless to say, many were appalled with the way America was being run.
